Canine Nosework is the sport and fun version of scent detection. Working scent detection dogs are used to find narcotics, bed bugs or explosives. Nosework, however, uses legal scents that are easily purchased and stored by the average person.

In the Advanced Nosework workshop, you and your dog will be introduced to more difficult searches such as new locations and types of containers.

The emphasis will be on weaning the dog off of food and on to finding the target scent alone. In addition, you will be shown a number of techniques that will teach your dog to give a formal alert

Registrants must have taken a beginner nosework workshop prior to attending this workshop.

Stacey Shaw has competed in flyball, rally obedience, and dock diving, and has trained in disc and tracking. One of the highlights of my training career has been my work with Bob Bailey teaching white leghorn chickens to match and sample. The other highlight was working with Steve White in his scentsational workshop where one of my dogs was used regularly for demonstration. I enjoy clicker training with horses as well as dogs. I’m extremely excited about the development of this new sport of nosework. I love how nosework can be done by virtually any dog and any handler, whether it is a new tool to help dogs have a more satisfied homelife or to find a new or first time sport to be able to compete in.

Please bring a crate or pen for your dog and have your dog on a flat collar or harness with a 6′ leash. You should bring lots of small treats and/or a toy the dog is crazy for.

The Walks ‘N’ Wags’ Pet First Aid  course gives you the skills you need to stabilize your pet so you can get them to the veterinarian for care. The course also has excellent information on preventative care and medical conditions.

Walks ‘N’ Wags’ Pet First Aid Course is the most comprehensive pet safety and pet first aid program available.

In this seminar, you will learn how to deal with dog and cat emergencies including: CPR & Artificial Respiration, Choking, Bleeding & Other Wounds, and Broken Bones & Joint Injuries.

You will also learn about the early signs of illness and disease and preventative medicine.

At the the end of the course you will take home an extensive, user-friendly manual and a carry-with-you “quick guide.”

When: Saturday May 26, 8:30am – 6:30pm

COST:$185.00 (inclusive of HST) — includes a manual, the quick guide and a certificate upon completion. Lunch will be provided.

11am-12pm – come join us for some quality social time with your small dog.  Open to all dogs 20lbs and under

12:15-1:15pm – bring your 10-24 week old active puppy to our indoor play area.  Enjoy socialization time with your new family member as well as other dog parents.

In this workshop, we will teach your dog how to locate a hidden target scent and alert the handler to its location.

Nosework is intended to promote confidence in your dog and provide intense mental stimulation. It is also intended to promote a positive, trusting relationship between you and your best friend given that you must learn to trust in your dog’s superior scenting ability and read the subtleties of canine body language.

No previous experience or training is necessary for this seminar.

Karin Apfel has been involved with dogs and training for over 20 years. She has trained and competed with her own dogs in a wide variety of sports and disciplines including obedience, flyball, agility, rally-obedience, tracking, and dock diving. She has also trained in Schutzhund, herding, disc and has done assessments and home visits for rescue organizations. For the past 15 years, Karin has taken extensive courses in behaviour studies to assist in the rehabilitation and training of dogs with fear, aggression or other problems.

Nosework is the most recent addition to Karin’s training roster after having seen the tremendously positive effects it can have on dogs and how welcoming it is to dogs (and humans!) with special needs or space issues. She is currently part of a group working under the guidance of a professional detection trainer to develop the sport.

Registration is at 8:30 A.M.  Judging starts at 9:30 A.M.

First event is Utility, followed by Open, followed by Novice.

Entry Fee $12 per run, or two runs for $20.
