Join us on Sunday, February 19 from 10am – 12:30pm. Joan Weston returns to SuperDog Central leading us through how to recognize, help and love the reactive dog.

Joan’s  Reactive Rover seminar offers us an in-depth look at all aspects of aggression including defining what aggression. The seminar digs into different types of aggressive behaviour, reactivity vs. aggression, dominance theory, and methods of treatment.

The first part of the Reactive Rover seminar focuses on defining aggression itself and leads us through different types of aggressive behaviours. We will then discuss five methods used for treating, or modifying, aggressive behaviour. And finally, Joan will give a hands-on training demonstration, which allows the group to witness real-world application of the methodologies discussed.

Seminar: $45.00. An in-seminar working spot $60.00 (filled). Private after the seminar $85.00. Only 3 working spots and 3 privates are available.

About Joan Weston: Canine Behaviourist

Joan Weston, born and raised in New York City, grew up with dogs all her life. After receiving her Bachelors of Science Degree from Northeastern University in Boston, Joan re-located to Toronto to pursue graduate research in Motor Learning and Sport Psychology, areas that would form the foundation for her career in training and behaviour.

Joan is a member of the International Superdogs Performance Team, entertaining millions across North America each year. She also trains for Competitive Obedience, Flyball, Agility, Conformation and Rally Obedience. Joan has also volunteered for both the Burlington Humane Society and St. Johns Ambulance therapy dog programs.

Joan works with all types of behavioural issues, however specializes in aggression. Joan also serves as an expert witness in various dog-related court cases in Toronto. She serves as a Behavioural Consultant with Who’s Walking Who Dog Training Centre. Joan has also assisted with temperament evaluations for the Orangeville S.P.C.A.

Joan is a published author in the magazine Dogs in Canada and the resident author of “On the Couch” in the newspaper Dogs, Dogs, Dogs.

At present, Joan is teaching a Durham College course entitled Animal Behaviour, Handling and Restraint. As well, she holds numerous certificates in dog behaviour and attends continuing education seminars on all dog-related issues on a regular basis.

Joan is involved in bulldog and pug rescue in the province of Ontario. On a personal note, Joan was the first overall pick to the U.S. National Women’s Hockey Team in 1987. She also received the Bronze “T” from U of T, also for Women’s Hockey.

Puppy Kindergarten
Time: 6-7pm
Duration: 6 weeks
For puppies 10-16 weeks of age, this is a great way to get started.
Learn how to build a trusting relationship with your puppy in a fun and safe environment. Introduction to basic skills, leash respect and recalls using positive reinforcement. Discussion about problem behaviour prevention and lots of time given to important puppy social interaction.

Basic Manners (Beginners)
Time: 7-8pm
Duration: 6 weeks
This class is aimed at puppies and dogs over 16 weeks. We cover all the basics you need for a happy family pet and promise an enjoyable night out. This class will help you to build great communication skills with your dog.
Using positive reinforcement you will learn the basics such as loose leash walking, impulse control, recalls, sit, down and stand. Let us show you how to be a good “leader”without conflict.

Skills for the Real World (Intermediate)
Time: 8-9pm
Duration: 6 weeks
We’re taking it to the next level! Pre-requisite Basic Manners
Continue to educate, polish your skills and add new ones. This class will fine tune your basic behaviours by building communication to ensure you and your dog have a healthy, positive relationship.Generalize your behaviours for the real world. Adding distractions, proofing recalls, sit and down stays, loose leash walking, boundary control.

Clickers are provided, but are not mandatory.
